What's on your checklist for a dream home? According to Rightmove, the nation's ideal property would be a four-bedroom detached coastal home with two living rooms, two bathrooms, a garden, garage, utility room and an office — while also being close to Tesco.
In a new survey, Rightmove analysed 2,023 Brits to find out what their dream home would be, where it would be located, and what they would want on their doorstep. Luxurious swimming pools and state-of-the-art gyms might be high on the list for many, but it seems a home office (and an affordable supermarket) is a bigger priority than a morning dip in a private pool.
Interestingly, while detached homes topped the list, bucolic cottages came second, with many preferring country living to city life. Elsewhere, those aged 18-34 said a home office is their top priority, while the 65+ age group crave a bungalow over a bigger home.
Tesco is the supermarket most people want to have nearby, pipping Waitrose to the post by a mere one per cent, but there are clear regional favourites. Aldi was voted the most desired in Scotland and the West Midlands, while Sainsbury's won the votes in Yorkshire & The Humber. In London, city dwellers prefer heading to Waitrose, as do those living in the South East, South West and East Midlands.
'The study paints a fascinating picture of what a "dream home" really means to people,' Tim Bannister, Rightmove's property expert, says. 'Usually you might think a dream home is a mansion with swimming pools and other luxuries, but the British sense of thinking practically comes through very clearly with garages, utility rooms and home offices the order of the day.'
Tim says Brits are after dream properties with amenities that they can actually make the most of. 'Perhaps it's the thought that if you have a dream home you want to make sure you're going to make use of everything,' he says, 'rather than choosing an outdoor swimming pool only to realise you can only use it a few weeks of the year, you think of a utility room that you know you'll be using every day.'
Rightmove also found that first-time buyers are the only group who would rather live in a town, while the vast majority of respondents prefer life in a quiet coastal village.
