The Queen, like most royalty, doesn't skimp when it comes to transport, with the monarch owning numerous cars, carriages, horses, and even the royal yacht. But perhaps the mode of transport used by the Queen that receives the least attention is the royal train.
If we're imagining this private train to be something of a palace on rails though, you'd be very wrong, as whilst it is very comfortable looking and easily fit for purpose, the decor in the train looks at least two or three decades past its prime.
Looking at some 2010 pictures of the carriage, starting at the bedrooms, the setup is very simple with single beds covered in plain white bedsheets and a thin bedside table comprising. On the bedside table is a phone, some water and a small bin, whilst a bedside lamp and some framed paintings complete the grey, almost hospital-like decor.

Moving onto the sitting carriages, once again the colours and luxury you expect are surprisingly muted. In one meeting room, sets of pale green and gold wooden cushioned chairs line each side of the mostly empty space with matching green curtains the only splash of colour. Bafflingly the grey room resembles a conference centre more than a mode of transport fit for royalty.
The story is broadly the same in the huge banquet carriage featuring a long table all the way down with room for 10 people to dine in. The other sitting room is a bit more refined, with a desk, wood panelling, and some fancy if somewhat loud patterns covering a sofa and the curtains on either side of the carriage.
The kitchen sparkling silver kitchen is equipped with all the tech and space you'd expect when needing to feed as many as 10 guests at a time, with dedicated royal chefs accompanying the Queen wherever she goes.
The Queen's office is perhaps the most surprising in its basic nature and drab decor, a desk, lamp, and telephone setup looking more like a Travelodge than a setting for royal business.
Whilst the Queen has been out and about less and less recently due to her mobility issues, judging by the lack of luxury on the royal train you can see why she might be keen to give any longer journeys a miss.
